Personal Statement

Research Interests

Research, teaching and leadership roles have spanned several disciplines -- cognitive science, computing and design. Interests encompass the various roles of communication through graphics, and the development of formal and cognitive theories relating graphics to language, especially for potential exploitation in human problem-solving, computer-aided design and human-computer interaction. This has included multimodal dialogue and the development of dialogue systems, diagrammatic reasoning and attempts to formalise the semantics of diagrams, and investigation of a variety of multimodal interaction techniques including haptics.

A particular interest in learning and education, especially the concept of vicarious learning, and the development of educational technology, has led to a focus on rich media in teaching and learning, including more interactive uses of video. This in turn led to receiving the Chancellors Award for Teaching in 2009.
